Today was such a beautiful day I think we set a record. We had 30 Sussex Cyclist participate in the Dewey Beer Company Harbeson trail ride. Thanks to my co ride leaders Mark Snader and Mike Guida, we split into three groups and had a great, safe, successful 30 mile ride. Plenty stayed for some after ride debriefing! This ride occurs every Monday . I can’t always guarantee this beautiful weather, but we always have a good ride.
The Sussex Cyclists 20th Anniversary Dinner on October 19, 2023, was a great success! With 50 members in attendance, it was a night filled with fun, celebration, and wonderful memories.
Attendees enjoyed a slideshow by John Kurpjuweit highlighting our club's journey while enjoying appetizers, buffet dinner, cocktails and beer.
In attendance were Bernadine Wonderlin and Tony Pezone who spoke about the formation and early years of Sussex Cyclists. Tony was the club's first president and served for 10 years. Bernadine is the wife of the late Larry Wonderlin, the founder of Sussex Cyclists and one of a handful of cyclists who championed the trail in Cape Henlopen State Park. Also in attendance was Fran Cardaci, the first club Secretary, and a current member.
Thank you to our Social committee (Diane Daly, Heidi Lerch, John Kurpjuweit, Allen Segal, and Denny Shook) for a truly memorable event!

We're excited to share some great news about Steve Mahaney. Many of you know Steve as a dedicated member of our club, having ridden over 250 times with us since he joined back in 2018. But did you know that Steve is also a swimming legend?
Steve was the Swim Coach at Fairmont State University in West Virginia from 1971-1988 and was quite impressive! He was named 1977 NAIA Coach of the Year, won 10 conference championships, and coached 150 All-Americans, 13 of whom were four-year All-Americans.
Steve just learned that the University is renaming the pool in his honor! That's right, the Mahaney Natatorium is going to be a shining tribute to Steve's incredible legacy.
Way to go, Steve!

"Caught on camera, our fearless leader! Thanks for a great ride."
The weather held out and it was a great ride today in the Amish Country Bike Tour. Sussex Cyclists was very well represented in the 62, 50, and 25 mile ride. The riding partners made the ride go smooth and was done before we knew it , and the pie was delicious. Pat Miller, Bill Gorodetzer, Jim Prettyman, Bob and Terri Fretz, and many others made our club proud!
Hi Sussex Cyclists & friends,
DelDOT has released a summary of the Lewes Bike Plan survey & comments that resulted from their June 15th public workshop held at the Lewes Library. DelDOT presented the summary to the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (LBPAC) on this past Monday evening, August 28, in a public meeting which I attended. Here is a link to the summary, which is in the form of a presentation (not a long form written document.)
To me, the most amazing results are the huge quantity of inputs that DelDOT received. There were 2,600 responses with 600 comments from 360 participants! Thank you to all the SCs and friends that provided your inputs, both at the June 15th workshop and online!
The presentation can be found at: https://deldotinteract.org/Customer/File/Full/d556f834-8e09-4e1d-bfcc-fd3fe72baee9
Just a heads up, the next public workshop for the Lewes Bike Plan will be on Wednesday, Oct 11 at 4:30p-6:30p at the Lewes Library. To see what is planned for the meeting check out the DelDOT website for the Lewes Bike Plan at: https://deldotinteract.org/d5548#3
Keep riding, safely!
Best regards,
