    From today's Cape Gazette:

The Delaware Bicycle Council is making a second appeal to have signs installed on paved trails to make it clear that mopeds are banned.

During the group’s Feb. 4 meeting, council member Marty Lessner presented a draft letter addressed to the Delaware Department of Transportation again requesting signs.

The letter emphasizes signs should be part of a broader plan that includes education about state ordinances and enforcement of the law.

After the state rejected its recommendation to install signs in an Oct. 30 letter, the Delaware Bicycle Council decided at a Dec. 3 meeting to continue pressing for action.

Thank you to everyone who made it out to Nicola Pizza last night for our Dine to Donate. The turnout was amazing. We don’t have the figures yet but the 50/50 was won by our own Fern Goodhart.

It was a wonderful get together. Thank you to Denny & Fran Shook and Jim Prettyman for organizing and making the evening a success!

We continue to be good citizens by working with DelDot in providing bike check events in the summer. Last year we were scheduled for 14 events but two were canceled due to weather issues. Still, we provided information and equipment to over 250 people and over 40 of Sussex Cyclists participated. In 2026 we have 16 events.

This year's checkpoints will run from June through August at various locations around Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. Each checkpoint will be posted separately on the Sussex Cyclists calendar for volunteers to register. The full schedule from DelDot may be viewed below.

No special skills are required. Activities may include distributing bicycle safety literature, making minor adjustments to bicycles, installing lights or reflective tape and giving out helmets.

Our new logo was approved by our board and members during our Annual Meeting on 1/15/2026!

This logo retains brand loyalty and recognition to our former logo (10 years old as of 2026) with the same imagery and colors, just simpler and streamlined and a more prominent cyclist.

Thank you to Anne Bari, our Communications Director, and to Renata Price for making this happen.

We hope you all like it!

From the Cape Gazette, by Bill Shull on Christmas Day:

When Chris Evans got on his bike last Aug. 9, he planned to ride 30-40 miles from Rehoboth Beach, along the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail, and take back roads home.

But, when he got to the trail crossing at Sweetbriar Road near Lewes, his life changed forever.
