    To: Sussex Cyclists Membership

On Monday of this week one of our ride leaders, while riding with a few other riders on Cedar Creek Road near Milton, was attacked and bitten by a medium – sized dog. The dog was accompanied by another dog and they appeared to act as a team. Our rider stopped and dismounted his bike and both dogs retreated to the back of their home. Our rider was bitten severely enough that he required treatment at an urgent care facility and now, unfortunately, is undergoing the rabies shot protocol. He no doubt will return to riding in a few days.

This incident occurred near the corner of Isaacs Road and Cedar Creek Road, on a route that many of our riders use.

There are a lot of opinions on the internet about what to do if you find yourself in this situation and it appears our rider took the right action in dismounting and using his bike as a shield. Using sprays and other devices, while sometimes effective, can also be even more antagonistic. The best action at this point, since the dogs were not under the control of the owner is to avoid riding in this location.

    Best Regards,

    Jim Prettyman, Safety Director

This year’s Annual Dinner was a great success—thank you to Joelle Giler and everyone who helped make it such a special night. It was wonderful to gather with friends, share stories, and celebrate another amazing year of cycling together.

We were especially honored to have Linda Kurpjuweit with us as we remembered John’s incredible contributions to Sussex Cyclists. A trophy was presented to Linda in recognition of John’s lasting impact on our club and the cycling community.

Nearly 30 Sussex Cyclists enjoyed a perfect day riding through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and Hoopers Island, led by Diane Daly. Sunshine, great food, and plenty of smiles made for a memorable outing. Thank you, Diane, for everything you do for our club!  And thanks to Pat Miller for the photos.

The new Millsboro Bypass was open for runners and cyclists today. Not sure when it opens for car traffic, but soon. It's only a little over two miles, but is pretty impressive with multiple bridges and overpasses over roads, railway and the Millsboro pond. It goes from 113 just north of Millsboro near Plantation Lakes to 24 just west of the chicken plant. There is a bike lane the whole way!

What a fun night on the Cape May - Lewes Ferry Rock the Boat. The weather was beautiful, the band was great, the friendships expanded, and we even caught a beautiful sunset. Great job by the Social committee, especially Heidi Lerch for organizing this great time.
